2012 Volkswagen Jetta Review:
"The 2012 Volkswagen Jetta offers a combination of European driving dynamics, spacious interior, and an affordable price tag. With a design shift from its more premium predecessors, VW aimed to appeal to a broader market with this model. The Jetta’s exterior is conservative yet elegant, with clean lines and a traditional VW grille that maintains the brand’s identity. It's a design that has aged well, offering timeless appeal compared to more aggressive rivals from the same period.
The interior of the 2012 Jetta is functional and spacious, especially for the rear passengers, where legroom is among the best in its class. However, compared to previous models, the interior materials were downgraded. Hard plastics dominate the cabin, which detracts from the premium feel VW was once known for. While it's well-constructed and everything feels solid, those expecting the soft-touch surfaces and high-end finishes of earlier Jettas might be disappointed. Still, the cabin remains practical, with user-friendly controls and ample trunk space.
When it comes to performance, the base 2.0-liter engine is underpowered for a car of this size, producing only 115 horsepower. It may feel sluggish, especially when overtaking or accelerating onto highways. The optional 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine with 170 horsepower provides a much-needed improvement in power and responsiveness, making it the better option for those who prioritize performance. The available TDI diesel engine is a standout for those who prioritize fuel efficiency, offering excellent mpg figures without sacrificing much in terms of driving enjoyment.
One of the highlights of the 2012 Jetta is its smooth and composed ride quality. Volkswagen engineers tuned the suspension to deliver comfort on rough roads without compromising too much on handling. The steering is light yet accurate, making city driving a breeze, while the car feels stable and confident on highways. Enthusiastic drivers might find the handling a bit less sporty than previous generations, but for most buyers, it strikes a good balance between comfort and driving dynamics.
Safety features on the 2012 Jetta include standard antilock brakes, stability control, and a comprehensive set of airbags, which offer good protection in the event of a crash. The vehicle earned respectable crash test ratings, though it lacked some of the more advanced safety features that were starting to appear on competitor models in 2012.
Overall, the 2012 Volkswagen Jetta caters well to buyers seeking a reliable and comfortable compact sedan. It offers solid German engineering, but the compromises in interior quality and the base engine’s lack of power may deter those who remember the higher standards of previous Jettas. However, for those in need of a practical, spacious, and fuel-efficient vehicle, the Jetta remains a strong contender."
