2015 Jeep Compass Review:
"The 2015 Jeep Compass is a compact SUV that aims to blend Jeep’s rugged off-road heritage with the practicality of an urban-friendly vehicle. While it offers some appealing qualities, it ultimately falls short in several areas when compared to competitors in the compact SUV segment.
The Compass is powered by either a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 158 horsepower or a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 172 horsepower. Both engines are paired with a choice of a five-speed manual, a six-speed automatic, or a continuously variable transmission (CVT). While the powertrains provide adequate performance for daily driving, acceleration feels sluggish, especially with the CVT. The 2.4-liter engine paired with the six-speed automatic delivers the most satisfying combination of power and smoothness, making it a better choice for those prioritizing performance.
On the road, the Compass provides a comfortable ride and easy maneuverability, making it suitable for urban environments. However, its handling lacks the precision and engagement found in rivals like the Mazda CX-5 or Honda CR-V. Off-road enthusiasts will appreciate the available Freedom Drive II Off-Road package, which adds enhanced all-wheel-drive capabilities, skid plates, and tow hooks, allowing the Compass to tackle light off-road adventures.
Inside, the Compass offers a straightforward and functional interior design, though the materials feel dated and lack the refinement of higher-quality competitors. Seating is comfortable, but taller passengers may find the rear seats somewhat cramped. Cargo space is decent, with 22.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 53.6 cubic feet with the seats folded flat, though these figures are on the lower side compared to others in the class.
Standard features on the 2015 Compass include air conditioning, cruise control, and a four-speaker audio system. Higher trims and optional packages add features like leather upholstery, a 6.5-inch touchscreen, and a premium audio system. However, the infotainment system feels outdated and can be slow to respond, diminishing the overall user experience.
Safety is another area where the Compass struggles to keep pace with competitors. While it offers basic safety features like antilock brakes and stability control, it lacks advanced driver-assistance features such as forward collision warning or lane departure warning, which were becoming more common in the segment by 2015. Crash test ratings are average, providing further room for improvement in this area.
The 2015 Jeep Compass excels in affordability and offers a rugged charm that appeals to those who prioritize off-road capability in a compact SUV. However, its underwhelming performance, outdated interior, and lack of advanced safety features make it less competitive against more well-rounded rivals. For buyers seeking true off-road capability in a small package, the Compass remains an option, but those prioritizing refinement and modern technology may want to explore alternatives."
