The 2017 Ford Explorer XLT offers a compelling mix of capability, comfort, and technology for families and active drivers who need space and versatility. Sitting in the middle of the Explorer lineup, the XLT trim builds on the base model with a more appealing set of features while remaining relatively affordable. With a confident presence and a well-appointed cabin, the Explorer XLT continues to be a solid choice in the three-row SUV segment.
Powering the standard XLT is a 3.5-liter V6 engine that delivers 290 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. This setup provides strong acceleration and smooth highway performance, especially when the vehicle is fully loaded. For those looking for better fuel economy or more torque, Ford also offered an optional 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 280 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. The EcoBoost delivers solid performance and responsiveness while offering improved efficiency, particularly in front-wheel-drive models. Both front-wheel and all-wheel drive are available, allowing buyers to tailor the SUV to their driving conditions and needs.
Inside, the Explorer XLT is spacious and thoughtfully laid out. It seats up to seven passengers with two front bucket seats, a second-row bench, and a third-row split-folding seat. Interior materials are durable, and the design is clean and functional, though not as upscale as higher trims. Front seats are power-adjustable and supportive, with heating available through optional packages. The second row offers generous legroom, and the third row, while best suited for children or shorter trips, folds flat easily to expand cargo capacity. With all rear seats down, the Explorer provides over 80 cubic feet of cargo space, making it well-suited for hauling gear, luggage, or home improvement supplies.
Technology in the XLT trim is a clear step up from the base model. It comes standard with Ford’s SYNC infotainment system and can be upgraded to SYNC 3, which offers a responsive touchscreen interface with smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A rearview camera is standard, along with rear parking sensors, and available options include blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. The available dual-zone climate control, keyless entry with push-button start, and remote start system enhance the everyday convenience for drivers and passengers alike.
Ride quality is composed and comfortable, absorbing road imperfections well for a vehicle of this size. Steering is light but accurate, and the Explorer handles winding roads and city traffic with surprising ease for a three-row SUV. When properly equipped, it can tow up to 5,000 pounds, adding another layer of utility for buyers with boats, trailers, or small campers.
Overall, the 2017 Ford Explorer XLT hits a sweet spot in the segment by offering plenty of space, solid performance, and user-friendly technology without climbing into luxury price territory. It’s an ideal option for growing families or those who need an adaptable vehicle for both daily driving and weekend adventures.

RECALL NOTICE
What is a recall:
A safety recall involving a motor vehicle or an item of motor vehicle equipment can be independently conducted by a manufacturer or ordered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In either case, the manufacturer must file a public report describing the safety-related defect or noncompliance with a Federal motor vehicle safety standard, the involved vehicle/equipment population, the major events that resulted in the recall determination, a description of the remedy, and a schedule for the recall. NHTSA monitors each safety recall to ensure the manufacturers provide owners safe, free, and effective remedies according to the Safety Act and Federal regulations. Manufacturers are obligated to attempt to notify owners of recalled products. For vehicles, that means manufacturers merge their own records of vehicle purchasers with current state vehicle registration information. For equipment, where state registration records do not exist, manufacturers are obligated to notify their distribution chain and known purchasers of the recalled equipment. However, even if you do not receive a notification, if your vehicle, child restraint, or other item of equipment is involved in a safety recall, the manufacturer is obligated to provide a free remedy.
