The 2017 Kia Sorento L is a solid entry-level choice in the midsize SUV segment, offering a strong combination of comfort, space, and value. Designed with practicality in mind, the Sorento L serves as an accessible introduction to the model lineup without sacrificing build quality or essential features. While it lacks some of the higher-end tech and luxury amenities found in upper trims, the Sorento L still delivers a refined driving experience that many budget-conscious buyers will appreciate.
Under the hood, the Sorento L is powered by a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 185 horsepower and paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. This setup provides adequate performance for commuting and light-duty use. It's not a performance-oriented SUV, but the powertrain feels smooth and predictable. Fuel efficiency is respectable for the class, with EPA estimates of around 21 mpg city and 28 mpg highway in front-wheel-drive configuration.
The ride quality is one of the Sorento's key strengths. Kia engineered the suspension for comfort, and the result is a quiet, composed ride that handles road imperfections with ease. Steering is light but responsive, making the Sorento easy to maneuver in tight parking lots and urban environments. While all-wheel drive is not available on the L trim, the front-wheel-drive platform still feels balanced and secure in normal driving conditions.
Inside, the Sorento L offers a clean, practical cabin with thoughtful layout and materials that punch above its price tag. The seats are well-padded and supportive, with ample headroom and legroom for both front and rear passengers. Though it doesn’t include leather or power adjustments in this base trim, the fabric seats are comfortable for long drives. The Sorento L also offers generous cargo space, with a wide, flat load floor and fold-flat rear seats that make it a strong choice for families or active lifestyles.
Technology in the Sorento L is basic but functional. It comes equipped with a 4.3-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, and a four-speaker sound system. The interface is simple and easy to use, ideal for drivers who prefer a no-fuss setup. Though it lacks smartphone integration like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto (available in higher trims), the essentials are present for hands-free communication and basic media control.
In terms of safety, the 2017 Sorento earned top crash-test ratings, and while the L trim doesn't include advanced driver assistance features, its strong structural integrity and standard safety equipment—like stability control, a full array of airbags, and a rearview camera—help provide peace of mind.
Overall, the 2017 Kia Sorento L is a well-built, no-nonsense SUV that delivers value, practicality, and a comfortable driving experience. While it may not be loaded with tech or performance upgrades, it excels as a reliable and roomy daily driver for those who want the benefits of a midsize SUV without the premium price.

RECALL NOTICE
What is a recall:
A safety recall involving a motor vehicle or an item of motor vehicle equipment can be independently conducted by a manufacturer or ordered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In either case, the manufacturer must file a public report describing the safety-related defect or noncompliance with a Federal motor vehicle safety standard, the involved vehicle/equipment population, the major events that resulted in the recall determination, a description of the remedy, and a schedule for the recall. NHTSA monitors each safety recall to ensure the manufacturers provide owners safe, free, and effective remedies according to the Safety Act and Federal regulations. Manufacturers are obligated to attempt to notify owners of recalled products. For vehicles, that means manufacturers merge their own records of vehicle purchasers with current state vehicle registration information. For equipment, where state registration records do not exist, manufacturers are obligated to notify their distribution chain and known purchasers of the recalled equipment. However, even if you do not receive a notification, if your vehicle, child restraint, or other item of equipment is involved in a safety recall, the manufacturer is obligated to provide a free remedy.
