The 2013 Forester 2.5X Premium strikes a solid balance between utility, comfort, and all-weather capability. With its standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system and decent ground clearance, it offers confidence in snow, rain, or light off-road conditions. The 2.5-liter “boxer” engine, producing about 170 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, is not what one would call sporty, but it provides adequate acceleration for everyday driving. It is especially decent with the manual transmission; however, the four-speed automatic option lags behind modern automatics in responsiveness and efficiency.
Inside, the Forester stands out more for practicality than luxury. The interior delivers roomy seats, especially in the rear, and a cargo area that’s generous for its class. The visibility is excellent thanks to large windows and a high seating position, making maneuvering and parking easier. Materials are serviceable — not plush — and while fit and finish are generally good, they can’t compete with more upscale competitors. Over long highway drives wind and road noise become more noticeable, especially for those used to quieter cabins.
Comfort is enhanced on the Premium trim with heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel. The panoramic sunroof adds a pleasant openness to the cabin when weather allows. The rear seats recline, improving long-ride comfort for passengers. On the flip side, fuel economy is only average for its class — the weight of AWD and the older automatic transmissions contribute to that. Also, there are known concerns among owners about oil consumption in many of the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter units; diligent maintenance and monitoring can help, but prospective buyers should be aware.
In terms of value, the Forester 2.5X Premium delivers a lot for its price when equipped properly: ruggedness, versatility, decent feature content, and Subaru’s reputation for durability. If you’re willing to accept modest performance and some trade-offs in refinement, this model provides strong utility and reliability in a compact SUV package.
