The 2017 Subaru Forester 2.5i continues to be a strong contender in the compact SUV segment, offering a balanced blend of practicality, safety, and capability. Designed with the typical Subaru focus on all-weather performance and long-term reliability, the base 2.5i trim may not boast luxury features, but it delivers where it matters most — in functionality, value, and everyday usability.
Under the hood, the Forester 2.5i is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 170 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or an optional continuously variable transmission (CVT), which most buyers opt for due to its smoother operation and better fuel efficiency. Subaru’s legendary Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system comes standard, offering confident handling in poor weather and on rough terrain, a key advantage over many front-wheel-drive competitors.
The interior of the 2.5i trim is straightforward and utilitarian, with a focus on durability and user-friendly controls. Seating is comfortable, especially in the front, and visibility is excellent — one of the Forester's signature strengths. The large windows and upright seating position make it an ideal vehicle for both city commuting and rural drives. Rear-seat space is generous for the segment, and cargo capacity is among the best in class, with over 34 cubic feet behind the second row and more than 74 cubic feet with the seats folded flat.
Ride quality is composed and comfortable, especially given the Forester's higher ground clearance. The suspension absorbs most bumps and imperfections well, making it a solid option for longer trips and daily driving alike. While it’s not particularly sporty, the Forester handles securely with predictable steering and good road manners. Wind and road noise are reasonably well-controlled, though the engine can sound strained under heavy acceleration, particularly with the CVT.
Safety is another major strength of the Forester. Even at the base level, it comes with a full suite of airbags, stability and traction control, and a rearview camera. Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist system — which includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, and lane departure warning — is available as an option even on lower trims, which was rare for the time and helped the Forester earn top safety ratings from IIHS.
Fuel economy is strong for an all-wheel-drive SUV. The 2.5i with the CVT delivers an EPA-estimated 26 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway, figures that compete well against more expensive rivals. The manual version sees slightly lower numbers, but for buyers who enjoy a more hands-on driving experience, it remains a rare offering in this segment.
Overall, the 2017 Subaru Forester 2.5i is an excellent choice for buyers seeking a no-nonsense SUV with real-world versatility. It may lack some high-end features, but it more than makes up for it with space, safety, fuel efficiency, and all-weather confidence.
