2016 Subaru Forester Review:
"The 2016 Subaru Forester 2.5i represents a strong offering in the compact SUV segment, particularly for buyers who prioritize practicality, all-weather capability, and solid safety credentials. Powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 170 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, the Forester 2.5i is not a performance standout, but it delivers smooth, predictable acceleration suitable for daily driving. Buyers can choose between a standard 6-speed manual transmission or an available CVT (continuously variable transmission), with the latter improving fuel efficiency and providing a more relaxed driving experience in urban and highway environments.
One of the Forester’s strongest assets is Subaru’s standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, a rarity in this class at the base trim level. This drivetrain provides superior traction in poor weather conditions and on loose surfaces, enhancing driver confidence in a variety of terrains. Ride quality is composed, and while the handling isn’t sporty, the steering is direct and the vehicle remains well-planted in corners. Road noise is more noticeable than in some rivals, but the payoff is a vehicle that feels durable and built with function in mind.
Interior space is generous for both passengers and cargo. The upright design contributes to excellent headroom and outward visibility, with rear seat space easily accommodating adults on longer journeys. Materials in the base 2.5i trim are utilitarian but solid, with controls that are intuitively placed and easy to operate. The cabin won’t wow you with luxury, but it does reflect Subaru’s philosophy of rugged, no-nonsense usability.
Safety is a high point for the Forester. It earned top ratings from both the IIHS and NHTSA, and while the EyeSight driver assistance suite is optional and only available on higher trims, even the base 2.5i comes with excellent crash protection. The vehicle also includes a rearview camera as standard, which was still not a guarantee in all base-model SUVs back in 2016.
The 2016 Forester 2.5i is ideal for shoppers who want an honest, practical SUV that can handle a variety of driving conditions with minimal fuss. It’s not flashy, but it delivers where it counts: reliability, space, efficiency, and surefootedness. It may lack the tech features and upscale feel of some competitors, but its core strengths make it a smart, long-lasting choice."
